Social Security Disability in Minnesota

On this page you will learn about Social Security Disability in Minnesota.  You will find information on applying, finding lawyers, ODAR address, denial rates and processing time at the hearing stage.

How SSA determines if you are disabled is the same for each state.  This page will talk about things unique to SSDI and SSI in MN.

So how do you apply for SSDI or SSI in MN.  You can apply for SSDI in several ways.  You can call 1-800-772-1213 and ask to make an appointment at your local SSA office.  You can also apply on-line at the SSA website.  If you have decided you want a lawyer for your claim you can have your lawyer help you send in the paper work.  If you are applying for SSI you have to make an appointment at your local office.

If you are about to apply or if you already have a Social Security Disability case going you may want to know what the denial rates are in MN.  For the year 2006, the denial rate at application was 59.5%.  At the reconsideration level it was 85.2%.  The denial rates for MN are not not that bad when considered with other states denial rates at application.  You can expect to wait about 3 to 6 months before you get a decision at application and sometimes even longer.

If you have decided you want a lawyer when looking it is a good idea to try and find one who has handled many SSDI and SSI claims and someone you are comfortable with after speaking to them.  Most lawyers charge on a contingency basis and get 25% of past due benefits with a cap of $5,300.
